Why is there a smiley face displayed below the footer?

This article describes how to remove the smiley face displayed below the footer. The smiley face is not built-into the theme and is actually being loaded in from the WordPress.com Stats Plugin.

The Smiley face is required by the WordPress.com Plugin to track your website’s stats. Luckily we’ve got a fix to remove the smiley without affecting your stats.

Please note: Do not attempt to use display:none to hide the smiley face. The smiley is required by the WordPress.com Stats Plugin and using display:none will prevent proper functioning of the Plugin. Instead follow the instructions below:

General Instructions:

  1. Log into your WordPress Dashboard
  2. Access the ‘Custom CSS’ section of your theme’s Site Options Panel by clicking on Appearance > Site Options > Custom CSS
  3. Grab the code below and copy/paste into the Custom CSS section
  4. Save changes and rejoice! :)
